[Episode 05] What To Consider When Socially Transitioning

by | Feb 28, 2020

Listen to the podcast episode…

This episode we’ll be exploring socially transitioning as an accessible non medical transition pathway.

Before we go further, I want you to know that in this episode I share some of my personal experiences with misgendering, homophobia and transphobia.

If you are someone that may be sensitive to these topics you may need to either listen with someone who can support you or plan to manage any feeling you may have come up for you.

Socially transitioning can come in many forms

It includes:

  • changing your name,
  • pronouns,
  • hairstyle and hair grooming,
  • clothes style,
  • the way your voice sounds,
  • how you walk or
  • the body language you use or
  • using cosmetics.

1. Socially transitioning on YOUR terms

A person can choose just one, or multiple options with their social transition.

There is no time frame that a person needs to follow as they transition.

Really, it’s a life long exploration of self expression, that may continue to evolve or find a happy point of balance at any time.

When it comes to socially transitioning, there are avenues which can be very visible and others that are much more low-key.

The choices you make will be dependant on what you feel comfortable with and also on how safe you may feel in expressing your true self.

As a community, many folks understand that they have to exercise caution in their self expression due to risks to their physical safety. It’s a sad truth, but one that can’t be ignored.

This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t transition socially.

2. Make a PLAN

Rather, it can be good to plan exactly how you choose to transition and how you share your identity with the people close to you.

Transitioning is a life changing act and though there will be times when it feels really hard, there will also be many times where it feels amazing.

3. Back Yourself

However you choose to express yourself, know that you are valid. Back yourself and don’t believe people who tell you that you are lesser for being who you are.

The trans and gender diverse community are some of the most courageous people around.

To actively live true to ourselves, knowing that there are people out there who will try to silence our voices? Wow, that takes more courage than the haters could ever muster within themselves.
